Covenant Health selected to demonstrate new continuing care model

The Alberta Government has recognized Covenant Health’s expertise and experience in seniors care by partnering with it to demonstrate a new way of caring for our aging population. The work will be done at Covenant Health’s soon to be constructed 100-bed continuing care facilities in Red Deer and Calgary.

Alberta’s Minister of Health Fred Horne made the announcement Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in Red Deer.

Both the Red Deer and Calgary facilities have been designed to be flexible. The buildings will adapt to multiple levels of care spanning from supportive living to long term care to specialized dementia care and palliative care.

“Seniors shouldn’t have to move between facilities when they need more support or care,” says Patrick Dumelie, Covenant Health, President and CEO. “These new centres will provide an environment where services can adapt to changing needs, helping seniors to stay in one place–in familiar surroundings, supported by their loved ones in a community they know.”

Both facilties are located in new residential neighbourhoods, so residents remain connected to the community and the community is connected to the facility. There is also enough land for future expansion based on community needs.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to be of greater service to seniors in Alberta, pioneering new approaches focused on responding to resident’s needs, maintaining connections to loved ones and community and promoting quality of life in a home-like environment,” says Dumelie.

Construction of the two 100-bed continuing care facilities could start as early as April 2012.
